caney-cementaryCapt. Ephraim MacLean led a company of men at the battle of Kings Mountain against the British.GREENVILLE, Ky. (8/20/14) — Old Caney Station Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Muhlenberg County.

Located near the junction of Kentucky 181 and Kentucky 60 in Greenville, there is no one designated to care for it. As a result of the neglect, the cemetery had become overgrown.

Kevin Duncan, proprietor of Excavation Plus, has stepped in to help rescue the cemetery by keeping the cemetery clear of weeds and trees.

Old Caney Station Cemetery sets in an area surrounded by trees. Duncan said that a chain link fence was placed around the cemetery in the late 70s. When one looks around the cemetery it can be seen where past preservation efforts have taken place but the overall condition of the cemetery is poor.

Some of Greenville's oldest residents are buried in the historic cemetery. The grave at the entrance of the fence is that of Capt. Ephraim MacLean who, under the command of Col. Andrew Hampton, led a company of men at the battle of Kings Mountain against the British, who were led by Gen. Charles Cornwallis.

The battle was a victory for what was to become the United States, as it crippled Cornwallis' army contributing to Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown.

While looking at the faded names, Duncan found a stone with the surname of Wing. He said that he had never heard of Wing in Muhlenberg County. After some research, SurfKy News found that Barnabas Wing and his family had settled in Greenville after moving from Sandwich, Mass. Due to the deterioration, it is unclear which Wing is buried at the cemetery.

Duncan said that most of the names on the stones are very hard to impossible to read. In fact, the only other one that could be read with effort was what looked to be W.H. Ganning.

Duncan is hoping to see funds set aside to help rescue the cemetery and others in the county that need looking after. Duncan said he enjoys local history and these cemeteries represent that history.
