MUHLENBERG COUNTY, KY - James (Jim) Harless, 75, of Greenville, KY died Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center Nashville, TN.

He was born May 1,1936 in Blooming Rose, West Virginia.  He has been a Christian since the age of 17 and he was an active member of the Central City congregation.  He had served as an elder in times past.  He graduated from college in Business and Accounting in West Virginia.  He was employed after graduation by Columbia Gas Company in Charleston, West Virginia in the accounting field.  He served in the U. S. Army Signal Corps from 1958 to 1960, returned to Columbia Gas after serving his time in service.

In 1965, he and his wife became self employed starting Hariess Wholesale Grocery Inc. in Greenville, KY.  Through the years they also operated a wholesale grocery in Paducah, KY, Food World Retail Stores in Greenville, KY and Beaver Dam, KY and a Hopkinsville Cash & Carry in Hopkinsville, KY.  They sold their businesses and retired in 1996.

Jim enjoyed life to the fullest with his family, church, friends, his work and his fellow workers.  He served on the Greenville City Council from 1972 to 1979, serving as the street commissioner.  He also served on the Greenville Ethics Committee. He was a past member of the Kiwanis club, past president of the Greenville High School Athletic Boosters.   He was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel in 1979.

Survivors include his best friend and loving wife of 53 years, Carol Jernigan Harless of Greenville, KY; a daughter, Michelle (Steve) LeGrand of Greenville, KY; three grandchildren, Madison, Kirsten, and Hayden who he truly enjoyed and loved; & his sister, Janice, who lives in Florida.

He was preceded in death by a daughter (Patricia Carol) and two sons Robert Earl (Bobby) Harless and James Michael (Mike) Harless.

Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening, November 21, 2011 at Gary’s Funeral Home Greenville, KY and service to celebrate Jim's life will be at 11:00 a.m Tuesday morning November 22, 2011 at the funeral home by Mr. Kenneth Joines.  Burial will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Powderly, KY.
