GREENVILLE, KY - Robert "Rob" Eugene Gwaltney, 55, died Monday, December 12, 2011, at his home in Greenville, Kentucky. Rob died from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, or PSP, after being diagnosed in 2009.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on August 25, 1956, he was the son of Mary Childers Gwaltney and the late Delbert L. Gwaltney Sr. Rob double majored with a BS in History and Religion from Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. He then went on to receive a Masters of Divinity and a Masters of Theology from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.
For 30 years, he served churches in Indiana, Kentucky, and Florida as a Baptist youth minister; spending 17 years of his ministry at First Baptist Church of Greenville, Kentucky. Rob also held part time jobs as a high school history teacher while in Florida, and religious studies teacher at the Central City Campus for Madisonville Community College.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Joy Clark Gwaltney; one son, Clark Robert Gwaltney of Memphis, Tennessee, and one daughter, Robin Joy Gwaltney of Greenville, Kentucky. His brothers include Dusty J. (Barbara) Gwaltney, Jr. of San Diego, California, and Michael (Roni) Gwaltney of Jacksonville, Florida.
Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church in Greenville, Kentucky, on Tuesday, December 20, 2011, in the Christian Life Center from 4-6 pm. A service will be held in his honor following the visitation; starting at 6 pm. Charles W. Midkiff and Michael Brady will be officiating. There will be no burial or grave site service in lieu of Rob donating his body to PSP research. Instead of gifts and flowers, the family wishes for donations to be made to the Cure PSP Foundation at give.psp.org. Gary’s Funeral Home Greenville, Ky. is in charge of arrangements.
