OWENSBORO, KY - Ruby Drake Ray, 87, of Owensboro passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at the Owensboro Medical Health System. Born in Greenville, KY on January 12, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Etta Hill Drake and was a member of Third Baptist Church. During World War II, she worked at the Haliburton Factory in Detroit as a “Rosie the Riveter”. Mrs. Ray also worked at Landshire Foods for many years, and worked with children at the First Christian Church Day Care Center and also at the Buena Vista Christian Learning Center. She enjoyed gardening, spending time with family,and was an avid U.K. basketball fan.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Jewel Ray in 1969; sisters, Eleanor Bacha, Josephine Schreiner, and Judy Eiland; and a brother, Benny Drake.
Surviving are children, David (Barbara) Ray of Blacklick, OH, Rodney (Debbie) Ray and Dawn (Bruce) Cecil of Owensboro; eight grandchildren, Jacob (Cassidy)Ray and Lucas Ray of Owensboro, Ellie, Erin, and Jonathan Cecil, all of Owensboro, Scott Nugent, Denny (Shelly) Robinson, and Chris Ray all of Ohio; five great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Nugent, Ashden Robinson, Hailey Robinson, and Riannan Ruby Robinson, and Harper Jane Ray; and two sisters, Muriel Cundiff of Muhlenburg Co. and Phyllis Jones of Owensboro.
Services are 1:00 P.M. Saturday, December 31 at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville with burial following in the Lone Star General Baptist Church in Muhlenburg Co. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 P.M. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory in Owensboro and from 10:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. on Saturday at Gary’s Funeral Home.
