Frank Vernon (Bud) Openshaw

BOWLING GREEN, KY - Frank Vernon (Bud) Openshaw, passed peacefully Sunday, October 21, 2012 at the Medical Center at Bowling Green surrounded by his loving wife, daughters and granddaughter.

Bud was born March 7, 1922 in Toronto, Canada, attending Western Technical-Commercial School where he stupassed away Electrical Contracting, later becoming a Master Electrician. Bud grew up with and married the love of his life, Helen. Bud served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and together, with Helen had three children while living in Canada, two sons, Robert Frank (deceased) and Bob and a daughter, Joanne.

The story goes, that a friend of Bud’s returned to his old Toronto neighborhood in the mid-1950’s driving a big red shiny convertible and telling tales of the “land of milk and honey” he’d found in California. It wasn’t long after that he convinced Helen to “pack up the kids, we’re going to California!”

Bud was so proud of his new country and wasted little time in becoming a U.S. Citizen and not long after, a fourth child, Lisa was born.

Bud established a successful electrical contracting business and enjoyed all that his new country had to offer. The family loved camping, fishing, sight-seeing and traveling. One of Bud’s favorite things was hunting for “treasures” at flea markets throughout the Los Angeles area.

California had been a wonderful experience for the Openshaw family, but in the early 1970’sthings were changing there and Bud started to seek a new place for his family to grow up. It was on a family vacation to visit relatives in Indiana that they discovered Bowling Green and shortly after that they moved and settled on a 33-acre farm in Plano, KY.

Bud always knew that his skills as an Electrician would take him anywhere and moving to KY was just one more adventure he’d experience in his adventure-filled life. Bud went to work for Phil Sears Electrical Service before striking out on his own doing electrical repairs and installations. In 1979, he opened Openshaw Appliance Parts & Service and although Helen didn’t initially know of his new venture, she was soon “enlisted” (more like “drafted”) to run the shop while Bud went out on service calls repairing home appliances.

In 2010, Bud and Helen sold the business they’d both worked so hard to build and retired to enjoy their family and friends.

Bud leaves to cherish his memory his only true love and partner for 69 years, Helen, one son, Frank Robert “Bob” Openshaw of Santa Barbara, CA and two daughters, Joanne Louise Lindenberger (Gary) of North Richland Hills, TX and Lisa LaPointe (Roger) of Bowling Green, KY, seven grandchildren, Paul Lindenberger, Brian Lindenberger, Hannah Willoughby, Kathryn Nordyke, Sarah Stair, Anthony LaPointe and Evan LaPointe, nine great grandchildren, a valued and loved employee, Rita Bryant and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorial Services will be held at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 on Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association.
