BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Virginia Steen Murphy, 94, of Bowling Green, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at Hospice of Southern Kentucky.
The Metcalfe County native was born November 20, 1918 the daughter of the late James Burk Steen and Blanche Thompson Steen.
Mrs. Murphy was preceded in death by her husband F.B. "Red" Murphy, three brothers; Harold B. Steen, Paul T. Steen and Bobby Steen. Mrs. Murphy earned her Master's Degree and Rank I from Western Kentucky University. Mrs. Murphy retired from the Warren County Board of Education. Virginia began her career in education as a primary teacher at Alvaton Elementary. After a number of years, she accepted a position as Elementary Supervisor. She served as Title IX Coordinator and was interim principal at North Warren Elementary. She was one of eight teachers who began the first Head Start program in Warren County and was in charge of the Summer School program at Delafield Elementary. Mrs. Murphy was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, Warren County Retired Teachers Association, and Kentucky Retired Teachers Association.
Mrs. Murphy is survived by two sons, James B. Murphy and his wife Patty Jo of Alvaton, KY and Rick Murphy of Bowling Green, KY; one daughter, Suzanne Murphy of Bowling Green, KY; three grandchildren, Callie Murphy Cromer of New Orleans, LA, Kate Murphy Henard of Dandridge, TN, Kelly Dale Murphy of Nicoma Park, OK; four great grandchildren, James Clay Cromer of New Orleans, LA, Caleb Steven Cromer of New Orleans, LA, Laurel Emery Henard of Dandridge, TN, Aiden William Murphy of Nicoma Park, OK; one brother; Dr. Jack E. Steen and his wife Dianne of Memphis, TN; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Loretha Withrow, Sheila Williams, and special friend and caregiver, Beverly Williams.
Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 22, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2012 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home.
