William Alton Brumit, Sr. of Bowling Green, KY

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - William Alton Brumit, Sr. – born October 7, 1921 – passed away January 25, 2013, at a Bowling Green nursing home.

The son of Willie Thomas and Minnie Bell Johnson Brumit, he rose from humble beginnings in the hills of Allen County to retire in 1978 as Assistant Chief of the Bowling Green Police Department. Never idle, Mr. Brumit went on to own a business, building homes as a second career. He finally stepped back from swinging a hammer at the age of 75, when he retired from managing Brumit Construction.

This KY son – like so many – enlisted in the United States Army in 1942. In 1944, he shipped out to Europe and served in General Patton’s Third Army. He shared little with friends and family about his time in the War, but he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, earning three combat stars and achieved the rank of Technical Corporal before leaving the Army as the war was winding down in December 1945.

Mr. Brumit was a long-time elder at the Park Street/Greenwood Park Church of Christ and a pillar of the community, commissioned as a KY Colonel and appointed to the Bowling Green Police/Fire Pension Board.

Above all, except his devoted faith to Jesus Christ, Mr. Brumit loved his family. He and wife Rachel Palmer Brumit raised four children, pinching pennies and working overtime to ensure there were beach vacations and private school tuition money for each to go to college.

The fruits of Mr. Brumit’s sacrificial love live on in three generations of Brumits who survive this honorable man.

He was preceded in death by his wife of forty-nine years, Rachel Palmer and his sister Winnie Brumit Palmer. He is survived by: his wife Dorothy Kimbel Brumit, a brother Carlie Brumit (Earline), two sisters, Rachel Brumit Osborne and Dorothy Brumit Childress (Buddy), all of Bowling Green; his four children: Bill Brumit (Linda), Brenda Brumit Word (Levi) of Bowling Green, Sharon Brumit Farmer (Richard) of Nashville, TN and Charlie Brumit (Kathy) of Mt. Juliet, TN; three step-children Brenda Kimbel Matthews (Jim) of Mt. Washington, KY, Darrell Kimbel (Becki) of Jackson, TN, and Phil Kimbel (Teresa) of Bowling Green; ten grandchildren: Abby Brumit, Jackie Brumit Brown, Jonathan Word (Megan), Alicia Word Sowders (Jason) and Logan Brumit of Bowling Green, Jennifer Brumit Hall (Ryan) of Park City, KY, Emily Farmer Pukas (Jim), Blake Farmer (Moriah) and Clint Brumit of Nashville, TN, and Grant Farmer (Megan) of Mt. Juliet, TN.; eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, eight step-grandchildren and sixteen step-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at the Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home Sunday, January 27, 2:00-8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Greenwood Park Church of Christ, 1818 Campbell Lane, January 28, at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery #2.

Expressions of sympathy can be made to: The Alton Brumit Scholarship Fund at Foundation Christian Academy and the Alton and Rachel Brumit Scholarship Fund at Lipscomb University, Nashville, TN.
