cupcakes taste 300MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (4/30/13) – The 6th Annual Taste of Muhlenberg was held on Monday, April 29, 2013 at the Muhlenberg County High School West Campus. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Muhlenberg County, this yearly event is usually held on Derby Day but this year, was moved to Monday evening.
 
Rotary Club Member, David Richey said that Derby Day was such a busy day for many restaurants that some said they wouldn’t be able make it if it was held on Derby Day.
 
At 5:30, David Richey welcomed everyone to the event and asked fellow Rotary Club member, Shannon Combs, to provide the invocation. After the “Call To Post”, Richey invited everyone to start visiting the 22 vendors whose booths were decorated around the theme of the Kentucky Derby, “Run For The Roses.” Some of the items offered for tasting included, pork loin, chicken salad, bruschetta, chicken wings, pizza, lasagna, sandwiches, strawberry pies, cookies, pasta salad, salads and coffee.
 
In keeping with the Kentucky Derby theme, medals were awarded for Win, Place and Show.
 
The awards for the Fast Food Category were:
Win (1st)-Sammie’s Salads & Such
Place (2nd)-Abry's
Show (3rd)-Tie-McDonald's, Long John Silvers, Wendy’s, Harkins Station
 
The awards for Casual Dining Category were:
Win (1st)-Smoking Toby’s
Place (2nd)-My Friend’s Place
Show (3rd)-Tie-Pizza Plus, Huddle House
 
The awards for Catering Category were:
Win (1st)-Maple Manor
Place (2nd)--Jean Jean's Catering
Show (3rd)-Tie-MCHS Culinary Arts, Walmart Deli
 
The awards for Bakery/Dessert were:
Win (1st)-Evie Does It
Place (2nd)-Miss Hoss’ Sweet Shop
Show (3rd)- J & H Bakery
 
“Honorable Muhlenberg Countains” Awards were awarded to Oasis and DiFabio’s.
 
The People's Choice Award was giving to the crowd favorite, MCHS Culinary Arts. New this year was the “Spirit Award”, which was awarded to Evie Does It.
 
Vendors were judged on appearance, taste and presentation.
 
Two $500 cash drawings were awarded to Michelle Vincent and Nathan Brothers.
 
Dining entertainment was provided by the MCHS Jazz Band, conducted by Troy Stovall.
 
Richey said that funds raised from this event will help a variety of sources, including the 4-H Food for Kids Backpack Program. Well over 400 people attended this event. “This has definitely been the largest Taste of Muhlenberg we have ever had. This is the most vendors and people we have had attend. We have been very pleased,” Richey said.
