PADUCAH, Ky. (3/18/13) – Kentucky State Police are currently investigating a collision on I-24 at the 37 mile marker.
According to witness statements and preliminary investigation, Joseph Cummins was traveling east in the right lane pulling heavy equipment tires on a trailer. David Jones was operating his semi-truck on I-24 also traveling east in the right lane behind Cummins. Jones misjudged the distance when closing the gap and quickly steered into the left lane in an attempt to avoid striking Cummins. Jones’ semi-truck struck the trailer as he changed lanes. After Jones changed lanes, he began to lose control of his semi. The semi crossed both lanes and flipped onto its’ side. The semi-truck then slid up an embankment off the roadway.
Joseph Cummins and his three passengers did not receive any injuries.
Both eastbound lanes of I-24 were closed for brief moments while the helicopters landed and while Stinnett’s Wrecker Service up-righted and removed the semi.
The Kentucky State Police was assisted on scene by Lyon County Ambulance, Lyon County Sheriff’s Department, Eddyville Fire Department, Kuttawa Fire Department, Lyon County Rescue Squad, Kentucky Department of Transportation, PHI and Air Medical.
