movie night1 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (5/30/13) – Do you miss the old day when you could go to the drive in and watch a movie? This summer, US Banks and the River Park Center in down town Owensboro is bringing the drive-in to you with the new Sunday Movies on the River Series.

This free event will take place once a month beginning on June 2. The movie series will include The Lion King on June 2, The Lorax on July 7, The Hunger Games on August 4, and Wreck It Ralph on September 15.

The event is free, with showing beginning at dusk in the BB&T Plaza. Concessions will be available, as no outside food or drinks will be allowed. Chairs may be brought, or chairs will also be provided.

“The Movies on the River program is in its eighth year with the start of this season,” said River Park Center marketing director Travis Estes. “We wanted to extend programming, and offer more free events to the community.”

With the development of Smothers Park, Movies on the River organizers expect quite a crowd this year.

“Movies on the River were started knowing that someday we would have this park and these facilities downtown,” said Estes. “We knew that the Movies Series would be a great amenity in downtown Owensboro.”

According to Estes, the River Park invested in a Twenty by Forty foot screen, projector, and surround sound equipment for the series. This year, the surround sound equipment will extend into Smothers Park, to allow those in the park to watch the movies from there

“We really just wanted to bring the drive-in experience to kids in Owensboro,” said Estes. “A lot of kids don’t get to experience that anymore.”
