Imagination Library Looking to Reach More Children in the Daviess County Area

dolly parton library 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (7/15/13) – If you’re a parent looking for an inexpensive way to help your young child begin the reading process, the Daviess County Imagination Library might be the place to start.
 
The Imagination Library, started by Dolly Parton, was originally just for the children of the East Tennessee area but has since grown to serve almost 688,000 in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada. The local chapter has put books in 2,500 local children’s hands since its beginnings in 2008. The Daviess County program sends out a monthly book to kids from birth to five years old whose parents have signed up on their website. The program doesn’t have any restrictions on eligibility.
 
“There are no socio-economic conditions (affecting who can request a book),” said Nancy Roberts, Daviess County Imagination Library Director. “It doesn’t matter who you are.”
 
Roberts said reading deficiency is still very high in the Daviess County area, but the program is looking to decrease the numbers starting early in development.
 
“The program helps children learn new words and vocabulary, but also show to properly handle a book,” said Roberts.
 
The Daviess County Imagination Library is mostly funded on grants and donations. A Storybook breakfast emphasizing the importance of reading held in May raised $2,000 for the program. The annual Spelling Bee will return later this year to hopefully gain some more funds as well, she said.
 
An average book order for Daviess County is $5,000 monthly. Being fee-free, it costs the program $30 a year per child, which is 12 books sent out plus postage to their homes.
 
The program has hosted many projects at local day cares, public events, and even the county fair to raise awareness for reading deficiencies and to promote reading and their program, but they would still like to reach more children and their families.
 
“Reading is the key to learning,” said Roberts. “We want to teach these kids a lifetime love for reading.”
