OMU Speaks Out On Higher Bills

money sign 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (9/7/13) - If you're an Owensboro Municipal Utilities customer who thinks your utility bill has been higher than normal lately, you're not alone. But it's just that season of the year, according to an OMU spokesperson who spoke with Surf Kentucky News about the issue. SurfKY reached out to OMU after hearing numerous complaints of customers receiving larger than usual bills.

"We experience this pretty much every summer because of the air conditioning, the bills just go up, it's really the usage that has gone up," said OMU Customer Service Manager Ben Hill.

Hill explained that he and his department will often show customers their bills from this time last year and once they see a similar sized bill, customers begin to understand it is the increased summer usage causing this issue.

However, some customers have seen such an increase that they request their meters to be reread, claiming the meter is not reading accurately.

"Our meters are tested every so many years and we monitor those regularly and we have a meter-reader go by every month," Hill says. "Electric meters are regulated by us to make sure they're measuring right because generally if they do go wrong, they slow down, they don't speed up."

Other customers have placed blame on OMU's fairly new billing system.

"We implemented that back at the end of May," Hill says. "We had a couple of issues with some of our bill templates that made it a little unclear, but that only affected a small percentage of customers so that really hasn't had any impact on the bill, the size of the bill, or anything of that nature."

Hill recommended customers contact OMU directly if they have a complaint.

"If someone has an issue with their bill, we would just love them to call us," Hill says. "If they'll call us, we'll be glad to talk to them and explain their bill to them."

OMU can be reached by phone at 270-926-3200. Other information can be found online at http://omu.org/
