Hooked on Science - Straw Sprayer

hooked science 300KENTUCKY (10/15/13) - Most of us use a straw to drink our favorite drink. Using a few ingredients from around the house you can turn your straw into a straw sprayer.

INGREDIENTS
• Drinking Straw
• Drinking Glass
• Water

INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1: About one fourth of the way from one end of the drinking straw, have an adult, cut a horizontal slit in the drinking straw.
STEP 2: Bend the drinking straw at the slit.
STEP 3: Fill the drinking glass with water. Place the short end of the drinking straw into the glass of water.
STEP 4: Make sure the drinking straw is bent at the slit and the short end of the drinking straw is in the glass of water. Blow hard through the long end of the drinking straw and observe.

EXPLANATION
The air flowing through the long end of the drinking straw pushes over the top of the short end of the drinking straw. This lowers the pressure, which allows the higher pressure on top of the water to push the water down and up, spraying it out of the short end of the drinking straw.  Go to www.hookedonscience.org for more experiments that might get you and your family “Hooked on Science.”
