AHS Beta Club Earns National Honor

dcps3 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (12/12/13) - The Apollo High School chapter of the Beta Club has been recognized as a National Beta School of Distinction by the National Beta Club organization.

The announcement by the national organization’s chief executive officer, Bob O. Bright, commends the AHS chapter for its “commitment to academic rigor” and “dedication to preparing students for college and career readiness.”

Beta Club is a service organization involving outstanding young people in 41 states and six countries. Beta Club members are recognized for their high academic achievements, leadership and commitment to service. High school students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25 to be eligible for membership.

The Apollo chapter was recognized for significantly increasing its membership, with a 10 percent gain during this school year. The chapter now has 90 members, including AHS juniors and seniors.

Among the Apollo chapter’s service projects are assisting with Fall Festival, Book Fair and Spring activities at Southern Oaks Elementary School; participating in Trail of Treats with the AHS Future Business Leaders of America; hosting two blood drives each year; serving breakfast during the school’s annual Veterans Day celebration; collecting toys for Christmas Wish; and hosting a dance marathon to raise money for the University of Kentucky’s pediatric cancer research program.

“I am very proud of my students,” said chapter sponsor Melissa Jarboe, who also teaches Advanced Placement English literature and English 101/102 at AHS. “Not only are they talented, hard working students in the classroom, but they care about their school and community. Beta Club’s motto is ‘Let Us Lead By Serving Others,’ and I believe my students truly exemplify this motto.”
