skillsusaHENDERSON, Ky. (4/23/14) — SkillsUSA members at Henderson County High School are celebrating success in recent state SkillsUSA leadership and skills competitions that were held from April 16 through April 19 at various locations in downtown Louisville.

Students from three different program areas at Henderson County High School, including automotive, information technology and visual communications, competed in events displaying skills in trade and leadership areas. Overall, these students collected seven gold medals and two silver medals.

Gold medalists are:

  • Alex Owens (computer programming)

  • Dylan Townsend (advertising design)

  • Jesse Lykins, John Pritchett and Alex Owens (career pathways showcase)

  • Andrew Abell and Kevin Zamora (digital video production)

Silver medalists are:

  • Ryan Johnson (computer programming)

  • Robert Sauer (Internetworking)

As of now, Owens, Townsend, Lykins, Pritchett, Abell and Zamora will now advance on to the national level competitions set for June 23 - 27 in Kansas City, Mo., at the H. Roe Bartle Hall and Municipal Auditorium.

The SkillsUSA Championships is the showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation. Contests begin locally and continue through the state and national levels. This is a multi-million dollar event that occupies a space equivalent to 16 football fields. In 2013, there were more than 6,000 contestants in 98 separate events. Nearly 1,500 judges and contest organizers from labor and management make the national event possible. The philosophy of the Championships is to reward students for excellence, to involve industry in directly evaluating student performance and to keep training relevant to employers' needs.

The students attending the conference would like to thank all the teachers and administrators who helped provide them with the chance to compete for their school and community.

Skills advisors are Jeff Givens, Zach Hamby, Scott Herschelman, Stuart Jones, Don Horvath, Ron Spencer, Kaleb Payton, Ginny Johnson and Madison Sewell.
