Dr. Crews Named DCPS Medical Director

dr crews-1Dr. Courtney CrewsDAVIESS COUNTY, Ky. (6/24/14) — Dr. Courtney Crews has been named medical director for the Daviess County Public Schools district, effective July 1, 2014.

Crews has been a partner for 10 years with Owensboro Pediatrics.

She replaces Dr. Donald Neel, who is retiring after serving in this voluntary role since 1997.

As medical director, Crews will review and approve standing orders for over-the-counter medications given to students by the DCPS school health program; and will oversee automated external defibrillator protocols and other medical issues that arise within the district.

Crews served on the DCPS Food Allergy Task Force in 2013 and was instrumental in developing policies and protocols adopted and implemented by the district during the 2013-14 school year.

Crews will work closely with Wendi Morgan, RN, who serves as DCPS health coordinator, in providing support for the district’s school nurses and health technicians. These professionals provide valuable services for students attending DCPS schools.

School nurses are responsible for providing leadership in overseeing school health policies and programs, serving in pivotal roles to provide expertise and oversight for the provision of school health services and the promotion of health education. Using clinical knowledge and judgment, school nurses provide health care to students and staff; perform health screenings; and coordinate referrals to the medical home or private healthcare provider. School nurses serve as liaisons between school personnel, family, community and healthcare providers to advocate for health care and a healthy school environment.

DCPS health services assistants’ responsibilities include administering first aid; screening ill or injured children, staff and visitors in accordance with state laws and district regulations; preparing and maintaining a variety of records, files and reports.

During his term of service, Dr. Neel played a key role in developing AED protocols and procedures when AEDs were first introduced to DCPS schools. He helped develop schools’ emergency response plans and has worked with school staff to improve attendance protocols.
