PADUCAH, KY (1/31/12) – The McCracken County Sheriff's Department arrested a Paducah man Monday evening charging him with various drug and traffic offenses.
Detectives began an investigation after receiving information alleging that Bobby J. Copeland was selling large quantities of crystal methamphetamine. As part of the investigation, detectives made controlled Methamphetamine purchases from Copeland.
On Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, at approximately 4:30 pm, detectives with McCracken County Sheriff's Department, the Marshall County Sheriff's Department and the Pennyrile Narcotics Task Force were conducting an investigation in McCracken County. Through surveillance, detectives observed Copeland driving a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero near the intersection of Old Mayfield and Houser Roads. Detectives asked for K-9 Unit Deputy Steve Croft to assist them in the stop and arrest of Copeland. Croft attempted to stop Copeland, but Copeland refused and fled in his vehicle.
A chase ensued that last approximately 10 minutes in various areas of McCracken County. The Sheriff's Department was assisted in the chase by detectives with the Marshall County Sheriff's Department. Copeland's vehicle was eventually stopped by vehicle intervention at the end of AT Massa Drive in McCracken County when he attempted to get back on the roadway.
From there, Copeland attempted to flee on foot, but was apprehended quickly by Deputy Cory Golightly. During the Chase, Copeland was observed throwing items from the vehicle that were later identified as digital scales, methamphetamine smoking pipes and a syringe.
Copeland damaged fencing and several yards in the area of AT Massa Drive.
During a search of the vehicle, detectives located and seized more than 38 grams of Crystal Methamphetamine packaged for sale with a street value of $3800 along with doses of Valium. Additionally, detectives seized several hundred dollars in US currency from Copeland, believed to be proceeds of illegal drug sales. While at the scene, deputies determined that Copeland was under the influence of Methamphetamine and other drugs.
Copeland was on felony parole at the time these offenses occurred and had just been released from the McCracken County Jail on January 3rd, 2012.
Copeland could face 20 years in prison in the event he is convicted for these offenses.
