OWENSBORO, Ky. (9/10/13) – The Owensboro High School Red Devils were hungry to take away the “reigning champs” title from Owensboro Catholic Aces, and it showed in their play Friday night, Sept. 6, during the season’s City-County Championship game as they shut out the Red Devils 43-0.

Owensboro’s defense was ready to play Friday night. They flew around the field and hit Catholic hard at every opportunity.

To open the game, the Aces received the kickoff and after three plays punted the ball to Owensboro. The Devils scored on their first possession with only running plays when Nick Locher faked a handoff to his running back.

That was followed by another quick possession by Catholic before Owensboro scored again whenever Airius Phillips would run it in from the two-yard line. Owensboro led 14 – 0 at the end of first quarter.

Early in the second half junior quarterback Nick Locher scored another touchdown when he ran the ball in from the one-yard line. Owensboro missed the extra point, leaving the score at 20 - 0.

Owensboro’s option offense proved difficult for Catholic to stop all night, and the Aces struggled to find the ball several times during the game. With around five minutes left in the first half, Devils’ Michael Johnson ran a 34 yard touchdown. They got the two point conversion, ramping up the score to 28 – 0.

Owensboro Catholic gained a little momentum whenever they recovered a fumble on the 29-yard line. One play later Jonathon Garner ran all the way to the two-yard line for the Aces but fumbled, giving the ball right back to Owensboro. This was the last opportunity for the Aces to score against the Devils. At half time the score remained 28 – 0.

Little changed in the second half for the Devils as Shamari Morton scored with three minutes left in the third quarter. After the two point conversion Owensboro led 36 – 0, leading to a running clock for the Devils.

The last touchdown came with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter when Shamari Morton scored from the 16-yard line. After the extra point, Owensboro reached the final score.

Owensboro High School Football Head Coach Joe Prince said he wanted his team to do two things. First, he wanted them to be the more aggressive team on the field, and second he wanted to protect the ball.

“When we didn’t turn the ball over, we scored,” he said, expressing pride about how the Devils were explosive with several big plays.

After the game Owensboro Catholic Head Football Coach John Edge said the opposing team’s defense was the winning element.
"They came out and hit us in the mouth,” Edge said. “They have great team speed."

This Friday, Owensboro Catholic faces South Spencer at home while Owensboro’s Red Devils travel to Bowling Green. The Aces will have to have to bounce back quickly, because traditionally South Spencer has a strong running game.
