WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (3/13/13) - Despite a bit of cold weather and spotty rain, the WCHS Trojan baseball team opened it’s early season last week in successful fashion with a 2-1 record. All spring sports team get a two-week head start on their season’s this year and the Trojans made the most of the opening week. Webster travels to Third Region powerhouse Apollo on Thursday and then host another strong squad from that region in Ohio County on Friday. The Trojans finish off the week against University Heights Academy in Hopkinsville on Saturday.

All nine Trojan starters crossed the plate in the Webster’s rout of the out-gunned Panthers in both team’s season-opener Thursday afternoon in Dixon. Webster scored in every inning and a nine-run fourth inning from Webster stopped action via the 10-run mercy rule after the top of the fifth.

“A win is a win and this was a great way to start our season, noted WCHS head coach Tom Welshans, who led the Trojans to 19 victories last season.

Webster scored two runs in each of the first three innings with Jalen Wallace, Tyler Hedrick and Brennan Pritchett slamming RBI-hits. Leading 4-1, the Trojans picked up two more runs in the third inning when Logan Prow’s fly ball to centerfield was misplayed.

Pritchett was also stellar on the mound, striking out seven in five innings and allowing two earned runs and just two singles. He ran into a bit of trouble in the fourth when the first two Panthers reached base and advanced to second and third with no outs. But the hard-throwing senior struck out the next three hitters to end the threat. Webster put the game away with its nine-run fourth inning, sending 11 hitters to the plate and taking advantage of three DSHS errors and three walks.

Madison Melton delivered one of the first big hits in the contest, a two-run double. Three hitters later, Reese Johnson ripped another two-run double pushing the lead to 12-1. Tyler Hedrick followed with a single to plate Johnson to complete the six-hit uprising. Johnson had three hits and four RBI while Hedrick added three hits and three runs-batted-in. Pritchett finished with two singles and four RBI.

"We just gave them the game,” is how Coach Welshans explained Friday’s loss to a strong Colonel team in Hopkinsville. The Trojans committed 11 errors which led to five unearned runs. Webster also stranded seven runners.“We simply made too many errors mentality and physically to beat anyone today,” Welshans stated.

Webster drew first blood on an RBI-single in the first inning by Hunter Nichols, driving in Logan Prow who reached on a walk. The Trojans made it 3-0 in the top of the third when Madison Melton stroked a two-run single. Melton, fresh off the basketball court, looked strong on the mound, stranding four runners in the opening two frames. But a bit of control problems bit him in the bottom of the third. He walked the first two Colonels and they came around to score on a WC fielding error and single to trim the lead to 3-2. A nifty, inning-ending double play by second baseman Tyler Hedrick limited the damage. Webster extended its lead to 4-2 in the fifth when Hedrick walked and moved to third on a infield error by CCHS off the bat of Hunter Nichols. But in the play, Nichols got caught in a run-down between first and second. While the Colonels were busy trying to tag out Nichols, Hedrick sprinted home for the 4-2 lead.

But the Christian County (2-0) bats came alive in the bottom of the frame with two singles, a walk and an RBI-ground out to cut the lead to 4-3. Matt Deck then followed with a booming double to leftfield give Christian a 5-4 lead. Hedrick came to the mound in relief in the sixth and after two walks, Webster committed two more fielding errors for the final score. Nichols led the Trojans at the plate with two singles and two RBI. Prow and Hedrick added two hits apiece.

WCHS senior Kyle Hayes highlighted a four-run fourth inning with a two-run double to lift the Trojans to their second win of the season Saturday afternoon at Trojan Field in Dixon. It was his first-ever varsity hit. The visiting Wildcats owned a 1-0 lead off WC starter Hunter Nichols leading into the bottom of the fourth. That’s when the Trojans got going at the plate as Tyler Hedrick and Nichols stroked consecutive singles. Madison Melton then drove in Hedrick with a single and two batters later, Alex Mitchell plated courtesy runner Zach Bruce with another RBI-safety give the Trojans a 2-1 lead.

Hayes, who hasn’t played baseball since the seventh grade, greeting a Wildcat relief pitcher with a shot over the head of the left fielder pushing the margin to 4-1.

“Kyle is an athlete who does what it takes to win. I think by the end of the season he will be doing great things for us,” Welshans said of the third baseman.

Trigg’s Trace Kurberski belted a two-run homer in the top of the fifth to trim the lead to 4-3. The Trojans got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning when Johnson reached on an infield hit and Melton chased him home with a two-out single, pushing the lead to 5-3.

Nichols, who struck out seven in the contest, pitched into the seventh inning, allowing a run on a one-out walk to David Wease. He eventually scored on a Trojan fielding error off the bat of Dillon Dawson. The Wildcat moved all the way to third base but Nichols stranded the possible tying run when he got a pop-up from the next hitter to end the game. Melton paced the Trojan hitting attack with three hits and three RBI, followed by two hits from Prow.

“We played well enough to win but still too many errors. Hunter pitched well despite lacking a command of the strike zone today. I will take the two wins so far, but we have much to work on ... we have to get better in all phases of the game,” Welshans concluded.
