WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (3/20/13) - It was a tough week for the WCHS baseball team as the Trojans suffered through four defeats and fell to 2-5 on the season. Webster is back in action Thursday hosting Hopkins County Central and then on the road against Paducah Tilghman on Friday. WC will participate in the Ohio County Wood Bat Classic on Saturday.

The Trojans stranded nine runners and fell to a solid Rocket squad last Tuesday at Trojan Field in Dixon. Webster was able to get runners aboard, but just couldn’t come up with the key hit. Two WCHS rallies were halted via double plays. A single run in the bottom of the first gave Webster a quick 1-0 lead. Crittenden tied the game in the top of the third but the Trojans got a two-out single from Tyler Hedrick in the bottom of the frame for a 2-1 advantage.

Hedrick then ran into trouble on the mound as the Rockets took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth on three singles, the last being a blooper just out of the reach of three Trojan players chasing home two runs. Webster loaded the bases in the bottom of the stanza but a fielder’s choice and double play killed the rally.

Crittenden (1-1) picked up a single run in the fifth and then added two more in the sixth for a 6-2 lead courtesy of a couple of WCHS fielding errors. Webster committed seven miscues in the game. The Trojans fought back in the sixth and loaded the bases off CCHS starter Devin Belt. He walked in the run with the sack filled but then struck out three Trojans to end the threat. WCHS received two more walks in the bottom of the seventh but a double play and strike out by Belt ended the game.

A ‘killer’ fifth inning sent the Trojans to their third straight loss last Thursday in Owensboro against Bob Mantooth’s powerhouse Eagles. The Trojans committed five errors in the fifth and squandered a 4-1 lead in the process. “We certainly have to tighten up our defense. We played pretty well, but we had that one bad inning defensively,” noted WCHS head coach Tom Welshans.

Mickey Morse paced the Webster hitting attack, going 2-for-3 and three RBI, all in the first four innings.

WC senior Brennan Pritchett was saddled with the pitching loss despite allowing just three earned runs on seven hits.

“He forced a lot of ground balls and pitched well. We just didn’t give him any help defensively,” Welshans added.

The Trojans looked totally out-of-sync last Friday on their home field en route to a 10-run rule loss to the visiting Eagles.

Ohio County banged out 16 hits and led 11-0 after just five innings of play. Leading 3-0, the Eagles ripped seven hits off WC starter Madison Melton in the third to plate seven runs for a 10-0 lead. Kyle Hayes came on in relief and got out of the third but then ran into trouble in the top of fourth allowing a single run. WC’s third hurler Jalen Wallace allowed a two-run single to Kiah Gledhill for a 13-0 lead in the inning.

Eagles pitcher Jon Kinison limited the Trojans to just one hit through four innings but did allow six walks. Trailing 14-0 in the bottom of the fifth, WCHS put together a mini-rally before the game ended via the 10-run rule.

Logan Prow smacked a single to start the uprising followed by a double from Reese Johnson off OCHS reliever Gledhill. Tyler Hedrick drove in both Trojans on line-drive single to left field.

A strong pitching performance from WC lefty Hunter Nichols was wasted Saturday afternoon in Hopkinsville as University Heights Academy used some timely hitting to hand the Trojans their fourth straight loss. Nichols cruised through the first three innings, setting down the Blazers in order. But a lead-off walk and four straight hits in the bottom of the fourth was all the offense UHA would need to post the victory.

The Webster bats were again very quiet as the Trojans managed just two hits and never put a runner past second base in the loss.

“We’ve got to get back to the basics on defense and at the plate. Right now we’re not playing with any confidence in the field or hitting. Our pitching has been very good for the most part, but when you don’t see any runs on the scoreboard, that has a negative mental effect on our pitching staff,” Welshans added.
