Nichols Fans 12 in Baseball Win Over Eagles

Trojans Baseball 300WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (3/27/13) - The Trojans scored six runs in the first inning but that wasn't quite enough to hold off Paducah Tilghman Friday night at Brooks Park in Paducah.

A pair of WCHS fielding errors in the fourth inning and two more miscues in the sixth open the door to a couple of Blue Tornado rallies. Spotted with an early 6-0 lead, WC starter Madison Melton allowed two runs in the bottom of the first but then held Paducah in check with strong pitching.

PT cut the lead to 6-3 in the second and then used Webster's poor fielding to tie the game in the fourth with three unearned runs. Tilghman got another unearned run in the sixth for the victory.

“We're just not making the routine plays in the field and it's very difficult to beat good teams when you don't make plays," noted Coach Welshans. “Maddy pitched well enough to win. He did a nice job and deserved better.”

Hunter Nichols led the Webster offense with two hits while Melton, Morse, Reese Johnson and Tyler Hedrick added one hit each.

The Trojans earned a bit of revenge on Saturday thanks to the outstanding pitching of Hunter Nichols. The Eagles dominated WCHS 14-2 just a week ago in Dixon.

But this time is was Nichol's time to dominate as he struck out 12 in nine innings and allowed just two hits. “Hunter was just outstanding and we played our best game of the season. We did a lot of things right today, it was a very good all-around game,” Welshans stated.

Neither team could push across a run until the top of the 10th when the Trojans put together three straight singles for the two-run rally. Tyler Hedrick and Nichols stroked back-to-back safeties and then Jalen Wallace chased home Hedrick with the third hit of the inning. Nichols moved to third on the hit and then scored three pitches later on a passed ball for the 2-0 lead.

Brennan Pritchett went to the mound in the bottom of the 10th and silenced the Eagles to give Webster is fourth win of the season.

Wallace led the Trojans offensively with two hits.

“I feel like we're starting to play much better. This was a big win for us today,” Welshans concluded.
