Lady Trojans Rock Ft. Campbell, Fall in 'All A' Regional Opener

webster sports 03WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (4/17/13) - Webster County High School softball team struggled Monday night in the opening round of the “All A” Classic Regional Tournament, falling 12-0 to a strong University Heights Academy squad in Dixon.

WCHS managed just five hits against Lady Blazer pitching ace Aleshia Hamby, two of those coming from Christian Papineau. Hamby struck out six in the opening round contest and allowed only two Lady Trojan runners past second base in the five inning contest. Webster played without its three seniors, Kolbi Edens, Kaylyn Winders and Maddy Yates, all on the annual Senior Trip. UHA grabbed a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first on three hits and one Webster error.

They made it 7-0 in the top of the second and then put together a five-run rally in the fifth for the commanding 12-0 lead.

A third-inning uprising with two-outs from the Lady Trojans loaded the bases, but Hamby got a strikeout to end the threat. Papineau smacked a two-out single and Jerrica Jones reached on a error. A walk to Kayleigh Woods loaded the bases but WCHS just couldn’t get the key hit to score a run.

Webster put three runners on in the bottom of the fifth but Hamby pitched her way out of the jamb with a strikeout and lazy fly ball to leftfield. Georgia Keeney, Kelsey Mays and Jones had the other hits for Webster.

The Lady Trojans completely dominated Fort Campbell last Tuesday and it just took four innings to ‘take care of business’ at Lady Trojan Field in Dixon. Jerrica Jones tossed a no-hitter against the Lady Falcons while allowing one walk and striking out two. It was her first pitching victory of the season. WCHS wasted little time getting on the scoreboard and leadoff hitter Christian Papineau started the 15-hit parade out with a bang. She drilled a home run over the leftfield fence to open the first inning and jump-start the Webster offense. It was Papineau’s second ‘bomb’ of the season. She led the WC offense with three hits, three runs scored and four RBI. Jones, Kaylyn Winders and Kelsey Mayes all had two apiece in the rout. Webster led 2-0 after the first inning and then added three runs in the second. Winders and Papineau both had RBI-hits in the rally.

A seven-run uprising in the third from Webster put the game out of reach. Georgia Keeney, Maddy Yates, Kolbi Edens, Kayleigh Woods, Jones, Winders and Papineau all scored in the frame. Webster then ended the game via the ‘mercy rule’ with three runs in the fourth. Woods, Edens, Yates and Keeney all had one hit in the victory while Keeney scored three runs, Yates, Jones and Winders two runs apiece.

The Lady Trojans are back in action Thursday, hosting district-rival Union County. They will participate in the Hancock County Tournament on Saturday.
