Trojans Top Union County for First Time in Seven Years

troj bb1 300WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky (5/8/13) - The WCHS baseball team split a pair of district games and now stand 1-2 in the district standings. The Trojans (12-15) topped Union County for the first time in eight years on Tuesday but then were plummeted by Henderson County for the second time this season. WCHS completes district regular-season play on Thursday, hosting Union County. Pre-game activities will also honor the seven Trojan seniors. Webster travels to Trigg County on Friday and then participate in the Marshall County Dream Maker Classic on Saturday.

Webster received a sparkling pitching performance from Brennan Pritchett and made the most of one hit to post the first win since 2006 over Union County last Tuesday night in Morganfield.

The Trojans broke open a scoreless game in the top of the sixth with a bit of ‘small ball’. Forcing Union’s hand on defense, WC coach Tom Welshans signaled for back-to-back bunts from Jalen Wallace and Alex Mitchell. Both bunts were misplayed by Union County allowing Wallace to third base and Mitchell on first. Pritchett then helped his cause by driving in the first run of the game with a groundout, scoring Wallace. Reese Johnson was issued a walk and then Tyler Hedrick launched a towering fly ball to centerfield that was also misplayed. Both Mitchell and Johnson easily scored on Union’s third error of the inning to give Webster a 3-0 lead.

“We really forced the issue and made them play defense. We were hitless through five innings so I just felt we had to do something to put the ball in play and make their defense work a little bit,” Welshans stated of the consecutive bunts. “That rattled them a bit and then the big error in centerfield was huge.”

Webster’s only hit of the game came in the top of the seventh when Madison Melton stroked a one-out single but was left stranded. Union (5-17) tried to rally against Pritchett in the bottom of the seventh when Heath O’Nan ripped a lead-off double and then scored one out later on a single.

But Pritchett enticed two easy fly balls to end the game and give the Trojans the much-needed district victory. Pritchett earned the complete-game victory allowing just three hits while striking out four plus no walks.

The Trojans jumped out to an early lead last Friday in Henderson, plating four runs off Colonel ace Sam Higgs.

A couple of infield errors and towering doubles from Hunter Nichols and Jalen Wallace highlighted the four-run eruption much to the delight of a large WCHS following. Logan Prow and Brennan Pritchett both reached on HCHS fielding miscues to open the game. Nichols then drove a high drive over the centerfielder’s head to plate both runners. Tyler Hedrick walked and both runners moved up on a groundout. Jalen Wallace then delivered another booming double to centerfield to push the lead to 4-0. But that would be the extent of the Trojan offense for the remainder of the game. Higgs limited WC to just one hit the rest of the way.

Henderson (21-7), who had defeated the Trojans last week 12-1, wasted little time in answering to the Trojan rally.

Higgs belted a long, three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to highlight an eight-run rally. It was one of four ‘bombs’ from the Colonels on the evening with a strong wind aiding all hitters. Justin Cessna added two homers while Kale Duckworth also pounded one over the fence. Henderson had 11 hits off three Trojan pitchers in just four innings.

The win also clinched the Sixth District regular season title for Henderson and top seed in the upcoming tournament. They finished with a 3-1 record in district action after losing to Union County 2-1 last Thursday.
