welsh retire redWEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (4/15/13) - For the final two weeks of the season, the WCHS baseball team will have a new head coach. Tom Welshans, who has guided the Trojans the past three years, resigned the position last Tuesday. Current freshman coach Steve Burns will take over the program for the remainder of the season.

According to Welshans, he met with WCHS Athletic Director Matt Bell and Principal Tim Roy last Tuesday morning. At the meeting, Bell recommended that Welshans resign “effective immediately” and he was presenting the recommendation and resignation to Roy for his approval. After a brief discussion, Welshans reluctantly agreed to resign.

“I would never quit on these kids or just voluntarily walk away from this program. We’ve worked too hard to turn this program around the past three years,” Welshans stated. “I feel very close to many of these kids, like they’re my own.”

Bell declined to comment on the resignation. He did say that applications for the position are being accepted.

Welshans took over the baseball program in 2011 after the Trojans went 5-27 in 2010. WCHS posted nine victories in his first season and then pushed the record to 19-16 last season, the most wins by a Trojan team since 2003 and the first winning record since 2004. Webster currently sports a 12-15 mark but also holds a All ‘A’ Classic Regional title, the first since 2004. The Trojans were just an eyelash away from winning the Sectional title, losing to Heath 2-1 as the Pirates rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

“I will always remember it (Regional) and I think the kids will as well,” Welshans added. “I’m extremely fortunate to be a part of it.” He emphasized that the Trojans were good enough to be very successful in post-season play. “I wish the kids the best of luck the remainder of the season and certainly in the district and regional tournament,” he stated. “They have the talent to go a long way and I’ll be pulling for them.”

Welshans was Webster’s most senior head coach, serving for eight years. He was head coach for the Lady Trojan soccer program for five years, rebuilding a team that was 0-17-1 in his first season to a very competitive squad throughout western Kentucky with a .500 record.

“It’s been a pleasure to coach these young men and women and be a part of their lives and I thank the administration and school board for allowing me the opportunity. We turned the soccer program around and then we turned the baseball program around,” Welshans added. “I can walk away with my head held high knowing I gave it my all and rebuilt these programs the right way for the right reasons. It’s truly been a blessing and an honor to be a part of these programs and I’ve had so much support from former players and from head coaches around the region (after the resignation). That’s very gratifying. But this is a situation where both parties are better off.”

Welshans stated he will now turn his focus on his family, especially his daughter Shawna, who is a highly-recruited junior soccer player for Madisonville-North Hopkins. His son Shane is a member of the Maroon freshman and junior varsity baseball teams.

“I’m looking forward to just sitting back as a parent and enjoy watching my kids play. I want to help them in their various sports, especially Shawna in the recruiting process,” Welshans concluded.
