The Madisonville native stated that the time spent away from his family was the main reason for his resignation. “I’ve been contemplating this (resignation) for a month or so and 100 percent the reason for me to leave is so I can spend more time with my family,” McCalister. “I have a two-year-old son and I miss seeing him during the season. Plus, my wife will be going to nursing school and it's my turn to support her and back her in her career choice. She was the main person who pushed me to take a head coaching job but now I want to support her.”

He guided the Lady Trojans to a 23-6 record last season, the most wins in 15 years, along with a All ‘A’ Classic Regional title in his first year at WCHS. He was also named Second Region ‘Coach of the Year’ in his first year as a head coach. Four of the losses came against top-ranked teams including three against fifth-ranked Henderson County and another at the hands of #15 Newport Catholic in the All ‘A’ State Tournament.

McCalister stated that he met with the Lady Trojans Monday morning to inform them of his decision. He also emphasized that leaving was a very tough decision.

“They’re great kids and I hate leaving a good program, but this is about my wife and my son, they definitely come first in my life. I hate that it is a ‘one-and-done’ type situation but I knew when I took the job last year that I would re-evaluate my situation at the end of each season,” McCalister stated. “Right now I just don’t want to spend all the time away from my family.”

WCHS Athletic Director Matt Bell said that an immediate search to fill the position has begun.

“I’m proud of the kids and certainly what we accomplished and I wish them all the best next year,” McCalister concluded.
