LEXINGTON, Ky (11/8/13)—Tonight at Rupp Arena the Kentucky Wildcats will start the season against UNC-Asheville at 7 p.m. They are a young team this year but Coach Calipari is confident as they start the season.
“I got four months to get this thing right,” Calipari said, “4 months. If I try to do it in two weeks I will cheat the kids and drive myself crazy.”
Calipari admits that after the watching the film of the two expedition games that the team was better than he thought they were at the time.
“I need more effort, more fight and more concentration,” Calipari said, “I want to put this team in a position to play offensively and defensively so they can do something special.”
As far as playing teams that are older than the Cats, Calipari knows that they have the physical presence to do what they want to do, but they are going to have to go out there and actually do it.
“It’s not fair when we walk on the court and everyone is more experienced than us,” Calipari said, “You risk a lot early season to figure out who your team is going to be. We need to get a group of 7 guys, get a rotation and have them play together.”
The Cats will be playing 3 games within the next 5 days, and although that sounds challenging, Calipari said that it was the only choice they had.
“We had to get ready for the game in Chicago against Michigan State.”
While nerves are high, Calipari is trying not to panic.
“I drove in this morning smiling saying that I had four months and I shouldn’t be panicking as I had both feet on the panic button,” Calipari said laughing,”
