UK Golf 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (9/10/13) – With the first round of golf in the books for 2013-14 season, the University of Kentucky women’s golf team sits in second place at the “MO”Morial Invitational, while freshman Haley Mills is in first place.

Playing in her first collegiate tournament, Mills went out and shot a two-under 70, which puts her alone in first place. The Tyler, Texas native returns to her home state for the tournament and seems to be right at home on the Traditions Club course. She recorded four birdies on the afternoon, including three on the back nine.

As a team, the Wildcats are in second place following the first round. The team posted a score of six-over 294, while the host school, Texas A&M is currently first at two-over 290. The teams return to the course at 10 a.m. ET Tuesday morning.

“We had a solid start to the tournament today and I'm proud of this group,” said Kentucky head coach Golda Johansson Borst. “You never really know what to expect when you have three new players, but I think they stepped up and set a mark for their expectations for this season.”

After a double bogey on the first hole, sophomore Sarah Harris regrouped to shoot an even-par round of 72. Harris will go into the second round sitting in a tie for seventh.

Freshman Alessandra Walker recorded a three-over 75 on Monday. After posting three bogeys through her first seven holes, Walker strung together 11-straight pars to finish the round.

Senior Liz Breed and sophomore Cylia Damerau each recorded five-over par 77’s in the first round. Both players are tied at 35th.

Playing as an individual, freshman Megan Kinney had a rough to start to the round, but settled in nicely on the final nine holes. She will enter tomorrow’s action tied for 35th at five-over (77).
