UK Baseball 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (3/12/14) — No. 16 Indiana mounted two-run rallies in the first and fourth innings to post a 7-2 win over No. 20 Kentucky, on a perfect Tuesday evening, in front of 2,746 at Bart Kaufman Field.

Kentucky (13-4) dropped its first game with the Hoosiers in the last four meetings, with the meeting marking the first time in modern UK history (2003-present) that the two teams faced off as top-20 foes.

Indiana got two-run frames in the bottom of the first and fourth innings, adding a run in the fifth inning. Indiana used homers from Dustin DeMuth and Kyle Schwarber to stretch its lead after the first-inning rally.

UK starter Dylan Dwyer (1-1) suffered his first career loss in his fourth career start. The Murray, Ky., native worked 7.1 innings, allowing five hits and seven runs, striking out a career high nine. After throwing a complete game shutout vs. Cincinnati last Wednesday, Dwyer had his streak of 12.1 consecutive shutout innings snapped in the first inning.

Kentucky junior right-hander Spencer Jack came on with runners on second and third and one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, allowing a hit and getting a double play to get out of the eighth.

The Wildcats were led at the plate by Max Kuhn and Micheal Thomas, with Kuhn belting his second homer of the year during a 2-for-4 game. Thomas also collected a 2-for-4 game, with UK also getting a RBI double from Austin Cousino, who extended his hitting streak to 12 straight games, with Thomas Bernal singling in the ninth.

UK sophomore Kyle Barrett and junior A.J. Reed had their hitting streaks snapped at 18 games, which marked the longest hitting streak for Kentucky since Caleb Stewart hit safely in 20 straight in 2004.

Indiana (8-6) starter Kyle Hart (2-1) worked eight strong innings, allowing five hits and two runs – one earned – not issuing a walk and striking out eight. The Hoosiers then turned to weekend starter Joey DeNato, who got one out, before Scott Effros got the last two outs of the game.

Indiana got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, as Schwarber lofted a two-strike pitch into shallow centerfield, with UK losing the ball in the sun for a leadoff double. Casey Rodrigue followed with a double down the rightfield line, scoring Schwarber. Scott Donley followed with a grounder to the right side, scoring Rodrigue.

UK got on the board in the top of the fourth inning as Kuhn smashed his second homer of the year over the leftfield fence, cutting the IU lead to 2-1.

Indiana added two runs in the fourth inning, as Casey Smith reached first base on a fielder’s choice. With Smith on the run on a two-out pitch, DeMuth homered over the rightfield wall. The homer snapped the UK streak of not allowing a home run in 122 consecutive innings, dating back to opening weekend vs. VMI.

UK cut into the lead in the top of the fifth, as Barrett chopped a grounder to the right side, reaching on an error, and then stealing his ninth base of the year. Cousino then doubled down the leftfield line, making it a 4-2 Indiana lead.

A first-team preseason All-America backstop, Schwarber got the run back for the Hoosiers in the bottom of the fifth, smacking a two-out solo homer over the centerfield fence.

IU got two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, chasing Dwyer from the game. After Nick Ramos reached on an error, Rodrigue doubled off the wall in rightfield. UK turned to Jack, who allowed a single to Sam Travis, scoring Ramos and Rodrigue.

UK will return to action on Wednesday, playing host to Northern Kentucky at 4 p.m. ET at Cliff Hagan Stadium.

The game will be broadcast live on the UK IMG Radio Network, with the Voice of UK Baseball, Neil Price, calling the action or online.
