Downey tossed his second career complete game, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits and 12 strikeouts. The junior gave up both runs in the first inning, and then allowed just four baserunners the rest of the game.
He got stronger as the game went on and struck out five hitters between the sixth and seventh innings. His 12 strikeouts marked the first time a Breds pitcher fanned double digits since Daniel Calhoun punched out 14 North Dakota State hitters March 7, 2009.
Downey had an impressive streak going of not allowing a run. That streak came to an end at 13.2 innings when he gave up a run with two outs in the first. That was not the only impressive streak for the southpaw as he has allowed just two earned runs over his last four starts, spanning 29.1 innings.
On the season, Downey is 4-0 with a 1.57 ERA. He has allowed just six earned runs and struck out 30 over 34.1 innings.He is tied for the OVC lead in wins, while ranking second in ERA.
