Webster County Lady Trojans Fall to Ohio County

jesportsbasketballWEBSTER COUNTY, KY (2/1/12) – Webster County’s week-long layoff took a toll last Saturday night as the Lady Trojans struggled offensively and fell 49-37 to Third Region powerhouse Ohio County in Beaver Dam.

After a solid first quarter with 12 points on the scoreboard, the Lady Trojans didn’t score in double digits in the remaining three quarters. Not only did Webster struggle with its shooting from the field, it managed only 2-of-9 free throws in the contest.

Junior guard Kolbi Edens was the only WCHS player in double figures, finishing with a game-high 17 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. Mariah Herrera and Brooke Ross jump-started the Lady Trojans in the opening eight minutes as Herrera scored six points and Ross four. But six Lady Eagles hit the scoring column in the first quarter to earn a 16-12 lead. Webster’s defense slowed Ohio County in the second stanza, limiting the Lady Eagles to just six points.

Edens found her shooting range in the period, scoring five points and helping the WC girls cut the deficit to just two points at halftime, 22-20. But Ohio County opened the second half with a 6-0 run and never looked back the rest of the game. A 13-8 run gave the Lady Eagles a 34-28 lead after three quarters of play and they closed out the game with a 15-9 scoring advantage on a pair of 3-pointers from reserve guard Sarah Stone and 5-of-7 free throw shooting down the stretch. Herrera finished with nine points while Ross added seven.

Christian Papineau and Hayleigh Dame added two points each.

Webster is back on the road this Friday, traveling to Union County for its final regular-season district game of the year in a boy/girls doubleheader. Webster is 1-2 in district play with a win over the Bravettes. UCHS is 0-3 losing both games to Henderson County like Webster.
