WEBSTER COUNTY, KY (2/21/12) – WCHS and Coach Christina Whitsell have much to be optimistic about, concerning girls basketball in Webster county. WC Instructional girls (ages 6-7) went 4-0 for 1st place this past weekend in McLean for the first of several regional ABA all-star tournaments over the next few weeks. The Training girls (ages 8-9) were able to earn a 1st place finish in their respective tourney as well.

In Calhoun, the 6-7 year-olds played game one against Madisonville. Playing just 5 minute quarters and being just 7 years old, these games aren’t typically high scoring affairs. After a slight first quarter deficit (2-4), the young lady Trojans used a 7-0 second quarter shutout to take a 5 point lead into half time. Maggie Jones and Katelyn Cates played great defense to help hold off Madisonville, and Mariah Austin led all scores with 7, going 3-4 from the free-throw line and taking 7 steals. Bridget Farmer posted 4 points to go with her 5 rebounds. Kendalyn Morris put 2 points in herself to go with 4 rebounds. Grayson Haynes pulled a couple of rebounds and had an assist. Lacey Pugh was all smiles as she dribbled the ball up the floor as the clock ticked out for the first win of the season, and the Lady Trojans win 15-6.

Game two matched the young Lady Trojans against the host McLean team. Kylie Hardison and Raygan Raynes led a defensive fight that left a very low scoring first half with the score tied 2-2. The second half shooting didn’t get much better for WC, but the defense did, as they shut-out McLean 6-0. Sydney Shoulders and Mariah Austin had 6 steals each, as Webster moves on to the next games in the winners bracket with a 8-2 victory.

No matter what age group or sport Henderson County is always a good game for Webster. WC got down early 0-5 in the first quarter and was losing 4-7 at the half. But a strong 4th quarter made the difference, as WC fought back 5-0 in that quarter. Austin led all scores again with 7 points, and Farmer again led with 7 rebounds. Mary Kate Rakestraw had a good defensive game with 3 rebounds and a steal. Webster had many shots roll off the rim and had many chances to take the lead in the last quarter, but a rebound in traffic and put-back by Shoulders pushed Webster to 10-9 win.

Henderson was able to fight through the double elimination brackets to the championship game for a re-match. It was Webster that jumped ahead this time with 6-1 lead in the first half behind a fast paced transition game by Madison Hinton. She scored 4 points and was fed by Austin with a pair of assists. Shoulders led the team defensively with 5 deflections and 5 steals. Raynes had a great assist to Shoulders on a give and go play in the fourth to put the game away. Webster claims first place in 12-7 win and brings the big trophy back home. The Webster Instructional girls will be hosting a tourney and be back in action this weekend at home.
