Webster had little trouble with an out-manned Tiger squad last Tuesday night in Trojan gym. WCHS raced out to a 21-10 first quarter lead and never looked back, doubling the advantage to 46-21 at intermission.
Senior guard Jacob Scott led all scorers with 31 points, including a red hot start of 15 points in the first quarter. He added another eight points in the second stanza. Webster had 12 players reach the scoring column in the contest as Blake Major was also in double figures with 13 points. Taylor Turner added nine points and eight rebounds while Logan Prow finished with five points. Jalen Baxter, Kyle Hayes and Landon Harting scored four points each, followed by three points from Madison Melton, Max McMain and Dan Boswell. J. D. Newton and Jason Hook completed the scoring with one field goal each.
Webster dialed long-range in the game, bombing 6-of-17 3-point attempts, two from Scott and one each from Hayes, Prow, McMain and Melton. After the blowout victory on Tuesday, the Trojans had much more of a battle on their hands Thursday night, a game that also featured senior night in Trojan gym for WCHS’s seven seniors. Another fast start propelled the Trojans to an early 18-10 lead, sparked by 10 points from Jacob Scott. He finished with a game-high 26 points.
Both teams slowed the pace in the second stanza as Webster used a 12-10 scoring edge to own a 30-20 lead at halftime. But St. Mary battled back in the third quarter and used a 12-8 scoring run to close the gap to 38-32. Both teams scored 18 points in the final eight minutes to set the final score.
Webster struggled at the free throw line in the gap which hinders any type of scoring cushion. In Tuesday’s win, the Trojans cashed in on 13-of-17 free throw attempts. But against St. Mary, WCHS managed just 10-of-21 accuracy from the free throw line. Even Jacob Scott, the state’s leading free throw shooter, had a sub-par performance from the charity stripe, hitting 7-of-10 attempts. Scott holds a 91 percent average for the season.
Blake Major and Logan Prow added seven points each in the victory while Landon Harting and Taylor Turner finished with five points each. Jalen Baxter came off the bench to score four points while Jason Hook completed the scoring with two points.
