rita and doreenWESTERN KENTUCKY (6/1/17) — Two SurfKY News journalists have been promoted within the company. Rita Dukes Smith has been named vice president and Doreen Dennis has been named a regional manager.

Smith joined SurfKY News in July 2013 and moved up the ranks from a reporter to news director. She now manages the news and business affairs of SurfKY News Region 3, which is comprised of Muhlenberg, Ohio, McLean and Daviess counties.

“I look forward to the challenge of growing our presence in Region 3,” said Smith. “There is no better medium to inform more people about breaking news, upcoming events, new business features and coverage of general news than SurfKY News. We have more than 19,000 Facebook followers seeing our stories in their news feeds.”

Smith has a long background in journalism spanning more than four decades. The former editor of Leader-News in Muhlenberg and lead reporter for The Messenger in Madisonville, she also was the manager for the Messenger-Inquirer’s Muhlenberg Bureau and worked for the Times-Argus in her early career.

Dennis has a rich journalism background as well. She joined SurfKY News in 2015 as a reporter and was named Region 2 News Director in February 2017. Formerly, she worked many years as a professional photographer in Muhlenberg County, and has worked at several newspapers in the western Kentucky area including the Times-Argus, Leader-News and The Madisonville Messenger. She is a Western Kentucky University photojournalism major, serves as treasurer at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Madisonville and volunteers for the Madisonville Police Department Citizens Police Unit.

“I enjoy the relationships with the people of Hopkins, Henderson, Christian and Webster counties,” Dennis said. “There is a lot of positive growth through the development of Interstate 69 in the area.”

SurfKY President Ron Sanders said Smith’s dedication and job performance earned her the position of vice president. He said Dennis’s can-do attitude and work ethics earned her a promotion as well.

“Rita and Doreen are very professional,” said Sanders. “They have the noses for news and are responsible in sharing that news with the public. They’re respectful of readers’ feelings while being on top of news readers need to know and reporting it in an unbiased manner.”
