health first logoWESTERN KENTUCKY (8/11/17) – Health First Community Health Center is joining in a national campaign to celebrate National Health Center Week August 13-19. This annual event serves to raise awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America’s health centers. Community health centers such as Health First serve more than 25 million Americans, a number that continues to grow along with the demand for affordable primary care.

Health centers provide high quality preventive and primary health care to medically underserved and uninsured people. Approximately one in 14 people in the U.S. relies on a HRSA-funded health center for medical care. Centers like Health First provide a medical home with services that promote health, diagnose and treat disease and disability and help cope with environmental challenges.

“National Health Center Week is an important opportunity for Health First to educate the public about who we are and how we can serve them,” said Health First CEO LeAnn Langston. “Health centers not only prevent illness and foster wellness, we also reach beyond the walls of conventional medicine to address the factors that may cause sickness, such as lack of nutrition, mental illness, homelessness and opioid addiction.”

Since its inception in 2010, Health First CHC has grown to include eight locations in Calhoun, Clay, Earlington, Henderson, Owensboro, Princeton and Providence. It’s most recent clinic opened in Princeton in July. Annually, Health First serves approximately 8,000 patients annually with a total of 30,000 patient visits. As a federally-funded center, it offers a sliding fee scale based on the patient’s income and family size. It is governed by a board of directors, in which the majority includes health center patients.

“At Health First, we strive to establish patients with a primary care provider who will listen to health concerns and work with patients to develop a wellness plan,” added Langston. “The Health First staff help patients navigate through the insurance system, public assistance programs, and much more. We truly are a medical home.”

Additional facts about community health centers:

• Producing $24 billion in annual health system savings;
• Reducing unnecessary hospitalizations and unnecessary visits to the emergency room;
• Treating patients for a fraction of the average cost of one emergency room visit;
• Maintaining patient satisfaction levels of nearly 100 percent;
• Serving more than one in six Medicaid beneficiaries for less than two percent of the national Medicaid budget.
