WEBSTER COUNTY, KY (2/15/12) – At a special called workshop session of the Dixon City Commission, Thursday night, Feb. 9, Dixon Mayor Linda Frederick asked commissioners to consider options for revisions to its health insurance policy due to premium increases that could have cost the insurance to have to be rebid.
Frederick said the anticipated premium increases would put the policy above $20,000 unless the commission made changes to the policy. She and Commissioner John Ramsey stressed several times during the workshop discussion that they didn’t want the city’s two employees — Dixon Clerk Peggy Poole and Dixon Water Operator Larry Parrish — to have to pay more out of pocket. They proposed setting aside city funds on a debit card that Parrish and Poole could use to help cover up-front medical costs, a suggestion that was implemented in the final approval of a new health insurance plan at the commissioners’ regular meeting Monday night (see related story).
During the discussion, Dixon commissioners reviewed six options for employee health insurance, and selected three options for the employees to choose from. The new policy will go into effect on March 1, according to information provided following the workshop.
The commission also reviewed the city’s property insurance coverage, noting several areas that needed revision for various reasons, such as increasing deductibles on city owned vehicles, adding park lighting and equipment to the policy and adding bond coverage for Commissioner John Ramsey. Some areas of coverage also need to be removed, officials said, including coverage on the city park’s tennis courts and fencing at Baker Park. City officials said they would also like to look into flood and earthquake insurance policies. Discussion of the potential changes continued during the commission’s regular meeting Monday night, but the topic of property insurance was tabled until the commission’s March meeting, when the policy will be up for renewal.
