Owensboro Red DevilsLEXINGTON, Ky. (3/7/19) — Owensboro faltered late as Ashland, the champion out of the 16th Region, pulled away to win 58-50 in the opening round of the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys' Sweet 16 State Tournament at Rupp Arena on Wednesday.

The victory allows Ashland to advance to the Boys' Sweet 16 Quarterfinals.

With the loss, Owensboro ended its season 23-8.

Ashland improved to 18-16 with the win.

The Tomcats used a 15-4 run in the fourth quarter to knock off the Red Devils.

Owensboro led 27-24 at halftime.

Devaunte Robinson paced Ashland with game-highs of 16 points and eight rebounds. Cole Villers added 14 points and six rebounds while Ethan Hudson posted 12 points as Ashland featured three scorers in double figures.

Isaac Humphrey paced Owensboro with 12 points and seven points. Accompanying Humphrey in double figures in scoring for the Red Devils, Amari Robinson-Wales added 11 points.

In the other opening round games played in the Boys' Sweet 16 on Wednesday it was Walton-Verona 76, Knox Central 54; Campbell County 61, John Hardin 60 and Louisville Trinity 70, Johnson Central 28.
