Owensboro Catholic logoLEXINGTON, Ky. (3/14/19) — Owensboro Catholic used a strong finish to defeat Bethlehem 53-47 in the opening round of the KHSAA Girls' Sweet 16 State Tournament at Rupp Arena on Wednesday.

With the win, Owensboro Catholic improved to 28-7 and advances to the quarterfinals of the state tournament.

Bethlehem, which led 37-35 early in the fourth quarter and outrebounded the Lady Aces 35-31, ended its season 29-5 with the loss.

Mackenzie Keelin led Owensboro Catholic with a game-high 15 points. Finishing directly behind Keelin in the Owensboro Catholic scoring column and narrowly missing a double-double, Hannah McKay added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Aces. Owensboro Catholic featured three scorers in double figures as Sarah Beth Clemens, playing out of a reserve role, posted 10 points.

Owensboro Catholic outscored Bethlehem 9-4 in the opening quarter but faced a one point deficit at halftime. Bethlehem clung to a 20-19 lead at intermission.

Unfamiliar foes, Owensboro Catholic and Bethlehem were tied 35-35 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

Amelia Hodges and Ella Thompson led Bethlehem with 14 points apiece. Barely missing a double-double for the Banshees, Thompson pulled down nine rebounds. Another Bethlehem player, Mikiah Livers-Bryant, grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Owensboro Catholic will face Scott County (34-1 in the quarterfinals of the Girls' Sweet 16 on Friday.
