Owensboro Red DevilsLEXINGTON, Ky. (11/30/19) — Owensboro came up short in its bid to advance to a title game as host Frederick Douglass held on to win 28-17 in the KHSAA Class 5A Football State Semifinals on Friday night.

With the loss, Owensboro ended its season 12-2.

Frederick Douglass moved to 14-0 and advances to the Class 5A state title game with the win.

The Broncos scored first and never trailed. Frederick Douglass led 14-0 at the conclusion of the opening quarter. The productive Broncos led 21-10 at halftime and remained in control throughout the second half.

Running back Devin Neal, who received an offer from Baylor less than one week ago, led Frederick Douglass to the victory. A Cincinnati commit, Neal rushed five times for 100 yards and one touchdown and returned a punt for a TD. Through the air for Frederick Douglass, quarterback Josh McClurg completed a scoring pass to Dane Key.

Defensively for the Broncos, Jaylin Bybee recorded two interceptions, returning one of the picked off passes for a touchdown.

Quarterback Gavin Wimsatt threw two touchdown passes in the Red Devils' season-ending loss. Wimsatt completed scoring throws to Tyren Hayden and Treyvon Tinsley.

Delivering on special teams for Owensboro, kicker Max Thurman booted a field goal.

Frederick Douglass will face Covington Catholic in the Class 5A state title game at Kroger Field in Lexington at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7.
