CCSO ARRESTSCALLOWAY COUNTY, Ky. (1/14/18) — When police stopped to assist a motorist yesterday, a cascade of events led to two men being charged in a recent rash of thefts from the Murray area.

Calloway County Deputies were headed south on Fourth Street, Murray, when they observed a man on foot and another near a disabled vehicle at South Fourth Street and River Road. When deputies checked on the men, they found one had active Calloway County warrants. The second man was observed dropping a small bag of white crystal substance in the snow and attempting to cover it up, said police.

After both men were arrested, two Murray Police Department officers began investigating by tracking the men’s footsteps in the snow. MPD said the men had taken a jack from Ron’s Muffler and had opened vehicles and toolboxes outside Hill Electric. An ATV had been taken from Blalock, Coleman and York Funeral Home and a van at Greater Hope Baptist Church had been entered and an attempt made to remove the ignition. Police said they also tracked their movements to CDM Construction on River Road.

Deputies were notified later that a truck had been stolen earlier in the day from a business in Hazel. Deputies viewed surveillance video from the business and identified the same two men that they had taken into custody. Authorities said the men took the truck to a house in Tennessee and left it. Then, they traveled back to Calloway County. The stolen truck, three utility trailers and tires and wheels were also found on the Tennessee property.

CCSO concluded the men had been involved in as many as 10 theft cases recently in Calloway County and Henry County, Tennessee.

CCSO charged Jonathan L. Blanton, 32 of Paris, Tennessee with Calloway County warrants for failure to appear and third-degree burglary.

Steven E. Capps, 43 of Paris was charged with first-degree possession of a controlled substance/meth, tampering with physical evidence, third-degree burglary, theft by unlawful taking less than $500 and theft by unlawful taking more than $500 but less than $10,000.

Police say more charges are pending stemming from the recent area thefts. CCSO is continuing its investigation along with MPD and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.

Both are being held in the Calloway County Detention Center.
