arrest2 red 300PADUCAH, Ky. (7/9/18) — Talk about a wrong number — a man was charged with drug trafficking after he mistakenly text messaged a retired sheriff.

McCracken County Sheriff Deputies charged a Metropolis man July 7 with second-degree trafficking in a controlled substance/amphetamine – greater than 10 dose units. Police said Jakeob M. Smejkal, 27 of Metropolis, Illinois messaged retired Sheriff Jon Hayden about wanting to sell pills.

Hayden contacted a drug detective that identified the number belonging to Smejkal. Detectives asked Hayden to message Smejkal to meet him in a Cairo Road, Paducah gas station parking lot to purchase pills.

Deputies Kyle Latta and Tom Starks stopped Smejkal driving a black minivan in the parking lot. Deputies seized 20 does of Adderall that he admitted he intended to sell.

Smejkal was lodged in the McCracken County Regional Jail.
