Hooked on Science - Color Changing Poinsettia December 10TH – 16TH

No flower says Christmas like a beautiful poinsettia. Our ‘science guy’ Jason Lindsey shows us the science behind the color changing poinsettia.

Do you have poinsettias at your house? Most likely they don’t change colors, right? These special science poinsettias, I have here in the Hooked on Science lab, will go from white to a beautiful pink. It’s all about an indicator. There is an indicator on my poinsettias and when I spray an acid on them, they stay white, but if I spray a base on my poinsettias, they turn a beautiful pink. Take a look! Pretty cool! Isn’t that amazing? Eventually they’ll go back to white. What I sprayed on my poinsettias was ammonia. Ammonia is a base. There’s carbon dioxide gas in the air, that carbon dioxide gas is an acid, and will cause the poinsettias to go from pink back to white. For hooked on science, I’m Jason Lindsey.

Thanks,

Jason Lindsey
