CHRISTIAN COUNTY, Ky. (8/22/19) — A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans a southbound traffic diversion along the Breathitt-Pennyrile Parkway in northern Christian County for emergency work starting around noon today.

As weather conditions allow, southbound traffic on the Pennyrile will be diverted off to U.S. 41 southbound at the Mannington Exit 30 interchange, KYTC Spokesman Keith Todd reports. Heavy rain has undercut some of the pavement in a work zone traffic crossover, creating a hazard for passing motorists. The contractor plans to divert southbound traffic for about three hours to allow repairs to the crossover.

Southbound drivers are advised to follow U.S. 41 southward to return to the Pennyrile Parkway via the Kentucky 800 Crofton Exit 23 interchange, Todd said. The impact on northbound traffic should be minimal.

In addition, there is a work zone with one-lane traffic and alternating flow controlled by an automated signal on U.S. 41 at the Little River Bridge just north of Hopkinsville. An additional diversion is planned along this same section of the Pennyrile Parkway on Monday to allow guardrail work near the crossover.

This work zone is part a reconstruction project along the Pennyrile Parkway that runs from about a mile north of the Kentucky 2642 overpass starting at mile point 16.556 extending northward to near the U.S. 41 ramp overpass at mile point 29.9, a distance of 13.344 miles. Motorists should continue to use appropriate caution along the entire length of this work zone.

Hall Contracting of KY, INC., is the prime contractor on this $43.2 million rehab project. Due to some additional work required along the work zone, the target completion date for this project has been extended to June 15, 2020.

The Pennyrile Parkway is designated as a future I-169 Spur Corridor.
