muhl mustangs1 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (3/2/18) — Muhlenberg County used an 18-1 scoring advantage in the second quarter to defeat 12th District champion Grayson County 49-33 in the quarterfinals of the Third Region Boys' Basketball Tournament at the Owensboro Sportscenter on Thursday night.

With the win, Muhlenberg County improved to 12-15 and advances to the semifinals of the Third Region Boys' Basketball Tournament.

Grayson County ended its season 13-17 with the loss.

The Mustangs set the tone early, doubling up Grayson County 10-5 in the first quarter. Muhlenberg County, thanks to the 18-1 run, led 28-6 at halftime and remained in control throughout the second half.

Will Nofsinger paced Muhlenberg County with a game-high 14 points and seven rebounds. Alex Vanhook accompanied Nofsinger in double figures for the Mustangs, scoring 12 points.

Narrowly missing double figures in scoring for the Mustangs, Trey Boggess netted nine points.

Nolan Shartzer paced Grayson County with 10 points. Shartzer was the only Grayson County player to reach double figures in the scoring column. Flirting with double figures, Bailey Logsdon and Logan Majors contributed nine points apiece for the Cougars. Active on the backboards, Logsdon grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

In the nightcap on Thursday night, Owensboro Catholic beat Breckinridge County 64-54.

Muhlenberg County will meet Owensboro Catholic in the semifinals of the Third Region Boys' Basketball Tournament at 8:15 p.m. on Saturday.
