Lady Aces Third Region ChampsOWENSBORO, Ky. (3/5/18) — Owensboro Catholic saved its best for last to defeat rival Muhlenberg County 55-45 in the Third Region Girls' Basketball Tournament final at the Owensboro Sportscenter on Sunday.

With the win, Owensboro Catholic improved to 26-7 and advances to face 15th Region champion Johnson Central in the opening round of the Girls' Sweet 16 State Tournament at BB&T Arena in Highland Heights at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

Muhlenberg County ended its season 23-11 with the loss.

Owensboro Catholic edged Muhlenberg County 11-10 n the first quarter and led 24-20 at halftime. However, Muhlenberg County used a 15-10 scoring advantage in the third quarter to take a 35-34 lead into the fourth frame.

But Owensboro Catholic thrived late, outscoring Muhlenberg County 21-10 in the final quarter.

Sarah Beth Clemens and Mackenzie Keelin led Owensboro Catholic with 14 points apiece. Accompanying Clemens and Keelin in double figures for the Lady Aces, Hannah McKay added 12 points.

Narrowly missing double figures and excelling in an all-around solid performance for the Lady Aces, Ellie Mitchell chipped in nine points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Owensboro Catholic shot 50 percent (19-of-38) from the field in the region title-clinching victory.

Raegan Blackburn led Muhlenberg County with a game-high 18 points. Joining Blackburn in double figures for the Lady Mustangs, Erica Cary contributed 12 points.
