Frank RamseyMADISONVILLE, Ky. (7/9/18) — One of the state's most adored basketball players, Frank Ramsey, a three-time All-American at the University of Kentucky and member of seven NBA championship teams with the Boston Celtics, died of natural causes Sunday morning. He was 86.

Ramsey was a part of Kentucky's 1951 national championship team. In college, Ramsey averaged 14.8 points per game for the Wildcats.

Boston selected Ramsey in the first round of the 1953 NBA draft. Ramsey averaged 13.4 points per game over nine seasons with the Celtics. He wore the No. 23 jersey for the storied Boston basketball franchise. He was dubbed the "original sixth man" during his time with the Celtics.

Both Kentucky and Boston retired Ramsey's jersey.

Ramsey made an impact in basketball both as a player and a coach. He coached the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association (ABA) for one season.

Off the court, Ramsey served on the Kentucky Board of Trustees.

In addition to basketball, Ramsey was an outfielder for the University of Kentucky baseball team, earning All-SEC honors in three separate seasons.

"Frank Ramsey was a true champion and a true Wildcat," University of Kentucky Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart said in a news release. "He was one of the best players our program and our state have ever seen and further cemented his legend as a professional. We offer our deepest condolences to Frank's family and friends."

A native of Corydon and graduate of Madisonville High School, Ramsey was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1981.
