hot chocolateDAVIESS COUNTY, Ky. (12/12/17) — Sorgho Elementary School students are putting learning to life by developing business and marketing plans – while also serving delicious hot chocolate to customers and participating in a special service project to benefit fellow students.

SES P-3 students have been working on a literacy text set centered around economics and business that includes both informational and literature-based texts. The students have learned about famous businessmen such as Milton Hershey, read about young kids who started their own businesses, and read the chapter book “The Lemonade War” by Jacqueline Davies, a story about a brother and sister who get into a contest over whose lemonade business will be most successful.

Students in each third-grade class at SES have been challenged to design their own business plans using economic terms, advertising and math. The project will come to life from noon to 2:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, as each class hosts its specially designed hot chocolate stand as part of the Sorgho Elementary School “Hot Chocolate Wars.”

Each stand will feature a unique and creative theme. Parents, staff members and fourth- and fifth-grade students will be invited to buy a cup of hot chocolate for 50 cents and choose which stand is most appealing to them based on their advertisement strategies. All proceeds will be donated to the school’s Family Resource Center to provide services and support to SES students and their families. Thanks to the value of real-life learning experiences and benefits for others, this is a “war” that everyone wins.
