senior chtristmas 2OWENSBORO, Ky. (12/19/17) — Wrapping and delivering more than 800 Christmas gifts gets done quickly when it is organized and there are approximately 70 “elves” to help.

That was the case Tuesday as volunteers had completed wrapping by 11 a.m. Then, the group loaded cars and began deliveries to elderly and shut-ins that otherwise may not have been remembered at Christmas.

Stephen Bryson and Kimberly Bryson with Home Instead Senior Care headed up the program with Owensboro Christian Church being a huge supporter and the focal point for wrapping and distribution.

The program, “Be a Santa to a Senior” is in its eighth year.

Bryson explained how the program works:

“Tags were placed on Christmas trees at various locations around Owensboro and people took a tag and purchased a gift for a senior,” he said.

senior christmas 3Bryson said gifts benefit seniors that might not have a family or the family cannot afford a gift. Gifts include, food, clothing, gloves, hats and many other items needed by seniors.

Nursing home service coordinators help identify those in need. The program also seeks to identify elderly living alone without family.

PBI bank, Don Moore Automotive, Walmart, Owensboro Christian Church, People Plus, Dana Corporation and Whitesville Baptist Church all pitched in. Olive Garden fed the volunteers and put up a tree supporting the program. Youth from Whitesville Baptist Church assisted in wrapping and delivery.
