kentucky trans yellow 300DAVIESS COUNTY, Ky. (12/26/17) — Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews are spreading salt on slick spots that developed early this morning after a line of snow showers moved through.

Daviess County High Maintenance Crew has had six trucks out since about 2 a.m.

Crews have been mainly focusing on bridges, overpasses and typical trouble spots.  Sunshine over the last few days has helped to maintain pavement temperatures.  However, bridges, overpasses and some hilltops exposed to wind have cooled enough to allow snow to stick as some of the heavier bands of winter precipitation have swept through.  Crews anticipate winding down their efforts shortly as the sun rises and temperatures rise.

KYTC engineers noted that with colder temperatures in the forecast for this next week that winter precipitation will become more likely to stick to highway driving surfaces as the temperature drops.  Crews will be responding appropriately anytime winter weather approaches the area.

Motorists are reminded to check their tire tread and use appropriate caution.  A recent study of crashes indicated more than half of the vehicles that ended up off the road in early snowfall events had tire tread that was below standards considered safe by the tire manufacturer's association.  Many tire stores and manufacturers have special pricing to help motorists get ready for winter weather.
