Highland Elementary School logoDAVIESS COUNTY, Ky. (2/6/18) — Students at Highland Elementary School will participate in “Start with Hello” throughout the week from Feb. 12-16 as the school celebrates National Random Acts of Kindness Day. These initiatives were developed as part of the Sandy Hook Promise, which engages people of all ages in “encouraging and supporting solutions that create safer, healthier homes, schools and communities.” ( https://www.sandyhookpromise.org)

“It is never too early or too late to start having conversations with our kids about reaching out to others who could be socially isolated,” said HES guidance counselor Laura McCain. “‘Start with Hello Week’ will be filled with fun, yet challenging activities to engage students with each other.” The schedule of activities at HES is listed below:

Monday, Feb. 12 – “Warm Welcomes” – Student greeters will welcome everyone into the building this day. Adults and kindergarten/first-grade students will be given a “Start with Hello” sticker to kick-start our week of awareness. Students in grades 2-5 will each receive a Start with Hello bracelet encouraging them to start looking for kids to whom they could reach out.

Tuesday, Feb. 13 – “Start with Hello Day” – Students will be encouraged to wear a “Hello! My Name is ....” label and to say “hello” to people they encounter throughout the school day.

Wednesday, Feb. 14 – “No One Eats Alone Day” – Students will be invited to move at lunch to eat with kids whom they normally don’t talk to. Conversation starters and “Start with Hello” suggestion cards will be on the lunchroom tables in the lunchroom to help students build a spirit of “connectedness” that can create new friendships and end feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Thursday, Feb. 15 – Random Acts of Kindness Day – Students are encouraged to go out of their way to speak or act in a way that shows extraordinary kindness today. Students, parents and families are invited to share examples of kindness the child exhibits outside of the school day as well.

Friday, Feb. 16 – Pledge Day – Students in grades 2-5 will be invited to write their “Start with Hello” pledge, confirming the three-step lessons learned throughout the week: See Someone Alone, Reach Out and Help, Start with Hello.

Highland Elementary School principal Leslie Peveler said the “Start with Hello/Random Acts of Kindness” activities are part of the school’s response in demonstrating support for students, staff and families of Marshall County High School. “We believe deeply in the value of compassion and support for others,” Peveler said. “Saying ‘hello’ to a person who is alone is so simple, yet so powerful. We want to let our students know they have the ability to make a difference in the lives of others.”
