dcps kids first colorDAVIESS COUNTY, Ky. (4/11/18) — Parents and incoming sixth-grade students who have signed up for or are interested in orchestra classes next year at College View or Daviess County middle schools are invited to an orchestra information open house from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 16, at DCMS, 1415 E. Fourth St.

String orchestra instruments include violin (fiddle), viola, cello and double bass.

Samples of good-quality violins, violas, cellos and string basses will be available for parents and students to play. Information about instrumental rental will also be available.

CVMS/DCMS orchestra director Karen Higdon will be available to answer questions and provide additional information about orchestra opportunities for students; and will assist students in finding instruments that are of interest and would be appropriate for the student.

Research indicates that students who study music in school are more likely to do well on standardized tests, such as the ACT. Orchestra also refines skills valued by college admissions offices and potential employers, such as discipline, teamwork, reading and math skills.

“Orchestra students have fun, create music and learn skills that they share outside the classroom,” Higdon said. “Some students become professional players. Some play in church, become recording engineers or teachers. Others become scientists, carpenters, doctors, computer technicians, farmers, homemakers or artists. Orchestra is for anyone who likes music and wants to play it!”

Advance registration is requested but not required. For more information, contact Karen Higdon at 270-852-7600 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
